CeBIT 2006, Hanover, Germany – Expanding its product portfolio of 3D displays for the professional market, Philips 3D Solutions introduces its 42” 3D WOW display with enhanced depth performance. Featuring an out-of-screen performance, whereby objects virtually fly in front of the screen, it immediately grabs the attention of the viewer. Philips 3D WOW display is intended for use in media rich environments such as stores and shopping malls to attract the visitors’ attention and leave them with an extraordinary and entertaining 3D experience.

3D screens without glasses

A New Zealand company hopes to bring a 3D effect that doesn't require special equipment or software to desktop monitors next year. Deep Video Imaging's “actualdepth” LCD monitors are based on a technology developed by Power Beat International which uses multiple liquid crystal display layers. The two-plane imaging gives the monitors depth by creating the look of a seamless foreground and background. DVI monitors are thinner than standard CRT monitors and are platform independent.

What is 2D + depth?

3D Stereo

In order to generate a 3D image, the display requires a regular 2D representation of the image and a depth-map. This depth-map indicates the

distance between each pixel and the viewer. The 2D image and the depth-map are used to create images on the screen, and these images are then merged by the viewer’s brain into a 3D sensation.

2D plus depth

Philips autostereoscopic 3D displays support the unique Declipse image format. The Declipse image format enables an even better viewing 3D experience and a true look-around effect along with the 3D visualization by the addition of 'background' information. Furthermore, easy creation of 3D overlays is provided by applying the Declipse format.

3D Content Enabling Technology

Philips 3D Solutions bring you a complete end-to-end 3D system that supports the process from 3D content creation up to visualization. Some applications today already use a 3D dataset, but only deliver a 2D image at the end. Philips now unlocks this content by supporting its visualization in 3D. Easy creation or adaptation of existing applications and content for the 3D display are enabled by a flexible 3D data format, in the form of 2D-plus-depth.

3D & 2D Dual Mode

Philips 3D Solutions allow 3D and 2D viewing on a single display. By detecting the content type, a soft switch effects a seamless transition between the two viewing modes. In 3D mode, each lens in the display bends the light in several directions, generating a 3D image. For displaying 2D content the lens effect can be eliminated by:

Soft-lens-switching, which eliminates lens effect by advanced signal processing.
LC-lens-switching, which switches off the lens on the display when full resolution is needed for an application such as Internet browsing or text.

Display Signal Processing

Visualizing 3D data on a 3D display at high picture quality, requires quite specific processing for image rendering. Philips 3D Solutions have developed a flexible hardware engine in the display that meets the needs of real-time 3D signal processing.

By rendering we mean calculating the image as a preparation for the display on the screen. Rendering creates multiple views out of the 3D data (2D plus depth). Those views correspond to different viewing angles of the scene in the 3D video or graphics. The amount of depth, as well as the positioning of the depth in front of or behind the display, is determined by the generation of the views.

Multiview Lenticular Display

Multiview lenticular technology allows multiple viewers wide freedom of movement without sacrificing 3D perception.

A sheet of transparent lenses, is fixed on an LCD screen. This sheet sends different images to each eye, and so a person sees two images. These two images are combined by our brain, to create a 3D effect. Because the sheet is transparent, it results in full brightness, full contrast and true color representation.

What is WoWvx technology?

What is WoWvx technology?
Philips WOWvx promises to help professionals create an exciting viewing experience. WOWvx based products make content richer, more informative and more entertaining for the viewer so that it almost comes ‘alive’. WOWvx provides the latest innovation in signal processing and display technology to attract the consumer’s attention and is well positioned for use in a wide range of consumer and professional applications such as digital signage, games, gambling, simulation and video.

Philips 3D Solutions

Intelligent WOWvx 3D displays
Philips 3D Solutions offers a range of autostereoscopic 3D displays for professional applications. Based on Philips WOWvx technology, they provide the best 3D viewing experiences today, without the need for special 3D glasses. The slanted multi-view lenticular lens technology leads to full brightness, full contrast, and true color representation.
Moreover, it allows multiple users to view 3D content at the same time within a large comfort zone. Philips 3D displays are based on a high-definition panel and create exciting viewing experiences in both 2D and 3D mode. Integrated, advanced display signal processing offers content creators and end-users full control over the picture quality and depth-effect characteristics. Next to Philips branded products, Philips 3D Solutions sells key components and licenses its technology to third party manufacturers to guarantee a broad supply of competitive devices on the market.

2D-plus-Depth format
The Philips 3D display solution is designed for maximum reuse of content and concepts from the 2D world. Easy creation or adaptation of existing applications and content for the 3D display are possible thanks to the use of a flexible 3D data format, in the form of 2D-plus-Depth. The 2D-plus-Depth format is compatible with existing production equipment and compression tools, and ensures 3D application performance within existing distribution mechanisms and standards, with a required bandwidth close to 2D.
Moreover, the 2D-plus-Depth format decouples content creation from content visualization and allows applications to use different 3D display screen sizes and designs in the same system.
Supported by various companies across the display industry, the 2D-plus-Depth format has been standardized officially by MPEG as a 3D video standard. Philips autostereoscopic 3D displays support the unique Declipse image format. The Declipse image format enables a true look-around effect along with the 3D visualization. Furthermore, easy creation of 3D overlays is provided by applying the Declipse format.

3D content creation and visualization
The 3D display solution from Philips is a complete end-to-end 3D system that supports the process from 3D content creation up to visualization. Some applications today already use a 3D dataset, but deliver a 2D image at the end. Philips now unlocks this content by supporting the visualization in 3D. Philips provides advanced tools to visualize 3D computer animations, real-time 3D applications, and video conversion from 2D to 3D as well as stereo to 3D conversion tools. Visualization of regular video content on the WOWvx 3D displays is enabled by the BlueBox and the RedBox. The BlueBox converts both 2D and stereo video content to 3D offline (semi-automated). The RedBox converts stereo content to 3D in real time, enabling broadcast of live events and sports, produced with stereo camera set-ups. With these tools, Philips will unlock the customer’s new and existing video material for high quality visualization in 3D using the 2D-plus-Depth format.
